I have been getting a TON of questions about how to sell via direct messages lately. It makes sense! With more of us building digital empires than ever before, the way we’re selling is evolving, too. Boardrooms and business lunches may still be the corporate sales norm, but if you aren’t promoting your digital product or service via DMs, you are needlessly leaving deals on the table. Read on for my 4-step process to start selling via direct message!
Step 1: Build a relationship first
We’ve all gotten that message from a complete stranger:
Hey girl, this tea I’m selling will get you beach body bikini ready!
Nope.
Let’s all make a pact to stop with the ice cold DMs. This is not your grandfather’s bro sales strategy! (No offense to your grandfather.) My approach to selling is all about building community and nurturing relationships. You should genuinely care and engage with your ideal prospects before you reach out and ask them to click a link or purchase something.
Step 2: Listen before selling
When you begin conversations with your ideal prospects, ensure that you are listening well. Really well.
Remember, you need to get to the crux of their pain point to understand how you can truly help them transform. You cannot do this unless you are truly listening and seeking a deep understanding.

Step 3: Share stories
Connection is the quickest way to a closed deal! Once you’ve listened and understood your prospect’s pain point, build that connection by sharing stories of how you’ve helped your clients solve that same problem.
By showing that you both understand your prospect’s problem AND have experience in solving a similar problem, you’re furthering your connection and revealing the transformation you can offer your prospect.
Step 4: Ask for the sale
Once you’ve gone through the above steps, it’s still on you to ask for the sale! Is this something you struggle with? I know many women who list asking for the sale as one of their primary concerns. They fear coming across aggressive or pushy. Let me clear this up for all of us now: there is a difference between being confidence and assertive, and being pushy or aggressive!
Humans want to feel wanted. Invite your prospect to work with you. Give them the opportunity to say yes to the transformation you’re offering!
